Former NRL player Tony Williams has slammed the judges of The Frownlow Medal for nominating his ex-teammate Jarryd Hayne for the nation’s highest sporting honour. Williams took to social media to launch an error and expletive ridden rant defending Hayne’s innocence, and earned himself a nomination for The Frownlow Medal Hall of Fame.
The Frownlow Medal is awarded to the player whose off-field demeanour epitomises the values of the modern-day footballer and draws attention to the status of footballers as role models to young Australians. It covers Australia’s four major football codes; the National Rugby League (NRL), Australian Football League (AFL), the A-League (Football) and Rugby Union’s Super Rugby competition. NRL player Shaun Kenny-Dowall won the inaugural medal in 2015, while AFL player Elijah Taylor is the most recent recipient.
The Frownlow Medal Hall of Fame honours former players and players who received media attention in previous seasons, for similarly scandalous behaviour, and its inductees include Ben Cousins and Julian O’Neill.
Hayne was recently sentenced to five years and three months in prison, and the guilty verdict makes him the current favourite to win the prestigious medal in 2021. Williams claims his former Parramatta Eels teammate is innocent and should never have been nominated, as he explained in the following post:

“To all Haynsy’s family and friends stay strong for him and let God do he’s thing I love you all … God always prevails.
“Before I let this be just want to congratulate the victim and the so called justice system you’ve sent an innocent brotherly to jail away from he’s kids you bunch of flops … that’s all respectively.”
Williams offended many people on social media and created a new language in the process. He introduced to the lexicon terms such as ‘an innocent brotherly’, ‘let God do he’s thing’, ‘he’s kids’, ‘Haynsy’s’ and ‘that’s all respectively.”
The man they call T Rex also argued that God would prevail, but did not explain why God didn’t stop Hayne from committing the crime in the first place.
Williams now achieves the honour of being nominated for The Frownlow Medal and The Frownlow Medal Hall of Fame. In 2018, he earned a Frownlow nomination after being sacked by the Parramatta Eels for testing positive to cocaine for the second time, and for having his licence suspended for drink driving.
If T Rex is inducted into the hall of fame later this year, he will also be gifted free adult literacy lessons.
