A supporter of NRL player Adam Elliott launched an expletive laden attack on judges of The Frownlow Medal in a bid to increase his chances of winning the prestigious medal.
The Frownlow Medal is awarded to the player whose off-field demeanour epitomises the values of the modern-day footballer and draws attention to the status of footballers as role models to young Australians. It covers Australia’s four major football codes; the National Rugby League (NRL), Australian Football League (AFL), the A-League (Football) and Rugby Union’s Super Rugby competition. Kiwi international Shaun Kenny-Dowall won the inaugural medal in 2015 before Corey Norman in 2016 and Tim Simona in 2017.
A fan by the name of ja_nice_tri took to the award’s instagram account to defend the player, commenting;
“yeah fuck you…if a cunt of a reporter hadn’t have stalked him to get the shots it wouldn’t even be known.”
The fan was obviously keen to remind everyone that if it were not for the reporter, the Bulldogs players would never have been seen drinking, stripping, dancing, vomiting and sleeping on the pavement at broad daylight on a Monday at a bar in the middle of Sydney.
While the fan’s devotion to Elliott is glaringly obvious, the exact identity of the person hiding behind the handle is not. The account has no posts and four followers.
Elliott will no doubt be comforted by the support, especially after copping a $25,000 fine from the Bulldogs, but even a gross tirade on social media may not be enough to help the forward to the prestigious award. Other contenders for this year’s award have assaulted people and taxi drivers, racially vilified people, failed drug tests and been accused of drug trafficking.
