The former Sydney Roosters player was embroiled in the wider investigation into the supply of drugs to players of the Gold Coast Titans. Despite not having played for the Titans, Hunt was investigated as being part of this group and was recently charged with possession of illicit drugs for the second time in his career.
The Frownlow Medal is awarded to the player whose off-field demeanour epitomises the values of the modern day footballer and draws attention to the status of footballers as role models to young Australians. It covers Australia’s four major football codes; the National Rugby League (NRL), Australian Football League (AFL), the A-League (Football) and Rugby Union’s Super Rugby competition. Kiwi international Shaun Kenny-Dowall won the inaugural medal in 2015 before Corey Norman in 2016 and Tim Simona in 2017.
The Frownlow Medal Hall of Fame honours former players and players who received media attention in previous seasons, for similarly scandalous behaviour, and its inductees include Ben Cousins and Julian O’Neill.
Than man nicknamed ‘Leather’ was mentioned alongside fellow Rugby League player and Frownlow nominee John Tobin, who was charged with helping to smuggle illicit drugs into Australia through the Sydney Fish Market.
Aiding Touma’s chances of entering the Hall of Fame is the fact that he pleaded guilty to breaching a bail condition when he failed to report to police in 2015.
If Touma is successful in gaining a place in The Frownlow Medal Hall of Fame, he will have one of the best scars of any player, having once been shot in the stomach over a bad debt.
