AFL player Jordan de Goey trained his dog to fetch beers from the Esky. Then he trained his dog to fetch the car keys. Then the dog became autonomous and persuaded de Goey to drive a car while drunk.
As a result, de Goey was caught driving at almost twice the legal limit in Port Melbourne and earned his second nomination for The Frownlow Medal.
The Frownlow Medal is awarded to the player whose off-field demeanour epitomises the values of the modern day footballer and draws attention to the status of footballers as role models to young Australians. It covers Australia’s four major football codes; the National Rugby League (NRL), Australian Football League (AFL), the A-League (Football) and Rugby Union’s Super Rugby competition. Kiwi international Shaun Kenny-Dowall won the inaugural medal in 2015 before Corey Norman in 2016 and Tim Simona in 2017.
De Goey earned his first Frownlow nomination in 2017 after he lied that he had badly injured his hand playing with his dog, but had actually injured it in a drunken bar fight.
The Collingwood midfielder has had his licence suspended immediately and is awaiting punishment from the Pies and the law.
Meanwhile, he is said to be training his beloved pooch to collect a medal and deliver an acceptance speech in anticipation of winning The Frownlow Medal later this year.
