Young NRL player Jayden Nikorima has been nominated for The Frownlow Medal after failing a second drug test.
Nikorima was sacked by the Sydney Roosters after failing the drug test and was issued with a 12 game suspension by the NRL.
The Frownlow Medal is awarded to the player whose off-field demeanour epitomises the values of the modern day footballer and draws attention to the status of footballers as role models to young Australians. It covers Australia’s four major football codes; the National Rugby League (NRL), Australian Football League (AFL), the A-League (Football) and Rugby Union’s Super Rugby competition. Kiwi international Shaun Kenny-Dowall won the inaugural medal in 2015 before Corey Norman in 2016 and Tim Simona in 2017.
If Nikorima could find a club for the 2018 season, he would still have to miss the first 12 games.
The promising young half and former Australian schoolboys representative must now wait and see whether his drug use was enough to destroy his NRL career or win him The Frownlow Medal for 2018.
