What made Trent Merrin so successful?

Trent Merrin may have revealed the secret to his success as a hard-running forward for NSW and Australia.

Merrin was charged with allegedly participating in a syndicate that was illegally manufacturing peptides, and he has earned his second nomination for The Frownlow Medal Hall of Fame.

The Frownlow Medal is awarded to the player whose off-field demeanour epitomises the values of the modern-day footballer and draws attention to the status of footballers as role models to young Australians. It covers Australia’s four major football codes: the men’s and women’s National Rugby League (NRL), Australian Football League (AFL), the A-League (Football) and Rugby Union’s Super Rugby competition. NRL player Shaun Kenny-Dowall won the inaugural medal in 2015, while AFL player Noah Balta is the most recent recipient.

The Frownlow Medal Hall of Fame honours former players and players who received media attention in previous seasons, for similarly scandalous behaviour, and its inductees include Ben Cousins and Julian O’Neill.

As a forward, Merrin played in one of the most brutal positions in professional sport. He was recently arrested during an investigation into an illicit peptide syndicate south of Wollongong, NSW, and was charged with participate criminal group, contribute criminal activity and five counts of manufacture goods for use in humans resulting in harm/injury.

Is this how he stayed so strong?

Does this explain his post-football career?

Merrin has already been nominated for Frownlow honours for numerous off-field scandals since retiring from the NRL.

In 2025, he was arrested and charged for ‘dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception’ in a matter involving cryptocurrency, and was sentenced to an 18-month conditional release order but avoided a conviction being recorded.

In 2024, he was charged with driving past his own house, which was in breach of an Apprehended Violence Order taken out by a former partner.

The former Dragon and Panther also launched Azure Partners to help other footballers prepare for public scrutiny. One of their clients was ex-NRL player Curtis Scott, who was found guilty of assaulting his former partner, and who earned multiple nominations for The Frownlow Medal Hall of Fame as well as a Wife Beater Tattoo. Merrin called Scott a “symbol of resistance and determination”

Merrin will need resistance and determination, and a little ‘pick me up’ to survive this latest scandal.
