Josh Addo-Carr will travel on foot for a while after allegedly testing positive for cocaine while driving. This is the second time the NRL player has been charged with this offence and the third time he has been nominated for The Frownlow Medal.
The Frownlow Medal is awarded to the player whose off-field demeanour epitomises the values of the modern-day footballer and draws attention to the status of footballers as role models to young Australians. It covers Australia’s four major football codes: the men’s and women’s National Rugby League (NRL), Australian Football League (AFL), the A-League (Football) and Rugby Union’s Super Rugby competition. NRL player Shaun Kenny-Dowall won the inaugural medal in 2015, while AFL player Noah Balta is the most recent recipient.
Addo-Carr was stopped for a random breath test in Sydney recently. He returned a negative test for alcohol but allegedly tested positive for cocaine. Police are still investigating the incident.
The flying winger and former NSW and Australia representative has surely used up his last chance in the NRL. He was on his last chance after being sacked by Canterbury for the same offence in 2024, and was lucky Parramatta offered him a contract. Back in 2020, he earned his first Frownlow nomination for posting photos on social media showing himself and others shooting, camping, and riding motorbikes on a beach in violation of COVID-19 lockdown rules.
Three Frownlow nominations and two drug offences have probably destroyed Addo-Carr’s NRL career and he may have to play in the bush or in England.
Wherever he goes next, he’ll have to trot!
