Gehamat Shibasaki must have taken a drink from Reece Walsh’s toilet because he recently turned up to training ‘sick’ and has earned a nomination for The Frownlow Medal.
The Frownlow Medal is awarded to the player whose off-field demeanour epitomises the values of the modern-day footballer and draws attention to the status of footballers as role models to young Australians. It covers Australia’s four major football codes: the men’s and women’s National Rugby League (NRL), Australian Football League (AFL), the A-League (Football) and Rugby Union’s Super Rugby competition. NRL player Shaun Kenny-Dowall won the inaugural medal in 2015, while NRL star Ezra Mam is the most recent recipient.
Shibasaki was stood down from the Brisbane team for the most important game of the year after he turned up to training under the weather – a breach of team standards. Pundits suspected he had been enjoying some XXXX the night before, as every loyal Queenslander is obliged to do, but the truth soon emerged. Shibasaki had been drinking from the cup of Broncos teammate Walsh, who also earns a Frownlow nomination for posting an image of himself online drinking from a toilet.
Shibasaki debuted for Queensland this year and has helped the Broncos to the top 4 but missed the game against Melbourne in the last round of the regular season. No one ever accused rugby league players of intelligence.
In another twist to the saga, it later emerged that the Origin player had been partying with players from crosstown rivals the Dolphins. If the Dolphins win their game this weekend, we now know why.
Walsh, meanwhile, earns yet another Frownlow nomination for yet another off-field scandal. He narrowly missed a nomination earlier this year for posting footage of himself jokingly punching his friend in the head. He has been nominated in previous years for other off-field scandals.
Again, no one ever accused rugby league players of intelligence.
Shibasaki should return for Brisbane as they attempt to win the premiership, while Walsh continues to be a great role model for his daughter.
