Angel Torres has been nominated for The Frownlow Medal after being charged with sexual assault.
The Frownlow Medal is awarded to the player whose off-field demeanour epitomises the values of the modern-day footballer and draws attention to the status of footballers as role models to young Australians. It covers Australia’s four major football codes; the National Rugby League (NRL), Australian Football League (AFL), the A-League (Football) and Rugby Union’s Super Rugby competition. NRL player Shaun Kenny-Dowall won the inaugural medal in 2015, while NRL star Talatau Amone is the most recent recipient.
The A League player was arrested on the Central Coast of NSW in relation to the alleged sexual assault of a 21-year-old woman in March. He has been stood down by the Mariners, who are attempting to defend their title, and he will not participate in any club activities while police investigate the matter.
Torres has been charged with two counts of common assault, intimidation and aggravated sexual intercourse without consent and will appear in court in early May.
