NRL legend Paul Gallen beat five guys at a South Coast pub recently and has earned yet another nomination for The Frownlow Medal Hall of Fame.
Gallen was filmed in a wild brawl at the Shoalhaven Heads Hotel while drinking with a group of friends. Leaked phone footage shows the footballer wrestling with a group of men near the pool table.
The Frownlow Medal is awarded to the player whose off-field demeanour epitomises the values of the modern-day footballer and draws attention to the status of footballers as role models to young Australians. It covers Australia’s four major football codes; the National Rugby League (NRL), Australian Football League (AFL), the A-League (Football) and Rugby Union’s Super Rugby competition. NRL player Shaun Kenny-Dowall won the inaugural medal in 2015, while NRL star Manase Fainu is the most recent recipient.
The Frownlow Medal Hall of Fame honours former players and players who received media attention in previous seasons, for similarly scandalous behaviour, and its inductees include Ben Cousins and Julian O’Neill.
The famous role model was on a Father and Son camp when the brawl took place.
It’s not known what started the fight, or who won the points decision, but the accomplished boxer was seen a few days later with bruises and cuts to his face and body.
The Cronulla hero is not afraid to take on more than one man. He famously fought two former Queensland origin players in the boxing ring on the same night.
Gallen is also famous for claiming he beat five guys during a game. He crashed through opposition defence, planted the ball over the try line and started celebrating, only to have the try disallowed. He then pleaded with the referee, saying something like,
“…but I beat five guys”
On this occasion, it seems Gal was beaten by 5 guys.
This is not Gallen’s first Frownlow nomination. In 2016 he was nominated for incidents such as racism, public urination and misuse of social media.
Gal is free to recreate the wild brawl at this year’s Frownlow awards night, where anything goes.
