Joel Smith will organise the 2023 awards night for The Frownlow Medal after finding himself with a lot of time on his hands.
The Frownlow Medal is awarded to the player whose off-field demeanour epitomises the values of the modern-day footballer and draws attention to the status of footballers as role models to young Australians. It covers Australia’s four major football codes; the National Rugby League (NRL), Australian Football League (AFL), the A-League (Football) and Rugby Union’s Super Rugby competition. NRL player Shaun Kenny-Dowall won the inaugural medal in 2015, while NRL star Manase Fainu is the most recent recipient.
Smith has been provisionally suspended after allegedly returning a positive drug test to cocaine during the AFL season. Smith tested positive during a in-competition drug test on August 20 when his Demons took on Hawthorn.
The incident has now become a test of new suspension and expulsion laws within the AFL, and it is possible that Smith could spend as much as four years on the sidelines. That’s enough time to organise a fantastic party for all of this year’s nominees for The Frownlow Medal and The Frownlow Medal Hall of Fame. And, if he does a good job this year, he might be given the job for many years to come.
