Former NRL player Allan Langer has promised to share a coldie with every single Frownlow nominee after learning of his own nomination for the highly prestigious Hall of Fame. Alfie decided this was the best way to celebrate the nomination, which he earned for incidents related to the abuse of alcohol and for breaking COVID-19 bio security protocols while working with the Brisbane Broncos.
The Frownlow Medal is awarded to the player whose off-field demeanour epitomises the values of the modern day footballer and draws attention to the status of footballers as role models to young Australians. It covers Australia’s four major football codes; the National Rugby League (NRL), Australian Football League (AFL), the A-League (Football) and Rugby Union’s Super Rugby competition. Rugby league player Shaun Kenny-Dowall won the inaugural medal in 2015, while fellow NRL player Ben Barba is the most recent recipient.
The Frownlow Medal Hall of Fame honours former players and players who received media attention in previous seasons, for similarly scandalous behaviour, and its inductees include Ben Cousins and Julian O’Neill.
Nominees are invited to Alfie’s Bar at the Brisbane Broncos Leagues Club, in Queensland, to reminisce on Langer’s drink driving charge in 2010. Guests will be regaled with tales of the alcohol consumption which put him three times over the legal limit before he got behind the wheel of his car.
Guests will hear how Langer was suspended from his coaching role at the Broncos as a result of the incident and how he was back coaching one week later. The plucky little halfback will then revel in the irony of being brand ambassador for Lion Nathan brewery at the time of his drink driving charge.
After a few more bevvies, the boys might even be lucky enough to witness a re-enactment of Langer’s famous underpants dance in a pub, which was captured on film. Nominees can then compare this performance with Langer’s current on-screen performances behind every ruck of every NRL game involving the Broncos and Queensland.
Of course, this grand event will have to wait until Langer finishes his two week COVID HOLD, handed down after he broke the NRL’s strict bio-security protocols by visiting…a pub.
At the end of the evening, nominees can call ‘shotgun’ as Alfie drives them all home in his Bar’s own courtesy bus.
