Brandon Wakeham fails to penetrate the defensive line.

NRL player Brandon Wakeham showed why he’s not playing first grade anymore when he failed to evade police outside Brookvale Oval on his way to a nomination for The Frownlow Medal.

The Frownlow Medal is awarded to the player whose off-field demeanour epitomises the values of the modern-day footballer and draws attention to the status of footballers as role models to young Australians. It covers Australia’s four major football codes; the National Rugby League (NRL), Australian Football League (AFL), the A-League (Football) and Rugby Union’s Super Rugby competition. NRL player Shaun Kenny-Dowall won the inaugural medal in 2015, while NRL star Talatau Amone is the most recent recipient.

The half-back was arrested and charged with alleged prohibited drug supply after a training session with the Manly feeder club Blacktown Workers and has been stood down from playing and training while an investigation takes place.

Wakeham played regular first-grade games for Canterbury Bulldogs and West Tigers but is now directing the attack in reserve grade. He probably won’t play first grade for a long time if he’s found guilty of charges of drug supply and participation in criminal activity. In addition, police reportedly searched his home and found a ‘dedicated encrypted criminal communication device’ and other items.

Wakeham has already contacted judges of The Frownlow Medal and offered to cater the annual awards night in order to increase his chances of winning the medal.
